Mastering Your Morning: The Ultimate Daily Routine for Women Over 40
There's nothing quite like the feeling of getting up with purpose, knowing that you have a morning routine that sets you up for a productive and fulfilling day. A good morning routine will leave you feeling energised, inspired and in a beautiful state of pure joy. Sounds too good to be true? Try it for a week, and just see if it doesn't change your life!
Why A Morning Routine?
More than just a list of tasks to check off before the sun rises, a morning routine is a powerful tool that can set the tone for your entire day.
Start Your Day with Intention
Instead of reacting to the day's events, proactively set the tone for how you want your day to go.
Boost Productivity
A consistent morning routine helps you become more efficient and effective in your daily tasks.
Improve Mental Health
Start your day with self-care to reduce stress and anxiety, leading to improved mental health overall.
Create Consistency
A morning routine provides a sense of structure and normalcy, which feels so comforting in this chaotic world.
When To Do A Morning Routine?
Contrary to popular belief, a morning routine doesn't necessarily mean getting up at the crack of dawn (which would usually require a very early bedtime, or lack of sleep!)
Let's just say there are morning routines and there are early morning routines, and you have the power to decide which is for you...
You could take a look at your existing morning patterns to see which parts are serving you well, which parts simply need to go, and which parts could do with a little adjustment. Keeping your current alarm-call time and tweaking what you do in the first minutes and hours of your day to start it consciously, is a great place to start for an effective morning routine.
On the other hand, you might want to try setting that alarm for 30 minutes earlier than usual, promising yourself to jump out of bed and fill that time doing something just for you. It could be anything you like, but pick something that makes YOU feel good, not sorting the kids, helping your partner, or cleaning the house...something that is special for you. Read a book, go for a walk, prep yourself a refreshing drink, meditate, do some gardening, or a hobby...try to avoid screen time at the very start of your day where possible.
Or if you really want to shake things up, a 5am morning routine is extremely popular. Getting up this early probably affords you an hour or two before the rest of your house wakes up to intentionally curate your day. You may well find that the bliss of that "free" time, more than makes up for the pain of the early start!
Personally I do a combination. During the week I like to try for an early morning routine of between 5am-6am wake-up, but if our 4 year old has woken me up in the night, I flex and give myself the grace of more sleep. On weekends or on weekdays where I've had to stay up late the night before, I will get up at my usual time of 7.30am and factor in my personal morning routine after we've done the school run.
How To Create Your Morning Routine
Creating a morning routine is a very personal journey. Here are some steps to help you create a routine that makes you feel good at the start of every day.
Identify Your Priorities
What do you want to achieve with your morning routine? It could be anything from feeling more energized to having more time for self-care.
Choose Your Activities
Based on your priorities, choose activities that will help you achieve your goals. This could include exercise, meditation, reading, journaling, or even a hearty breakfast.
Schedule Your Time
Decide how much time you can realistically dedicate to your morning routine. Remember, it's not about how long your routine is, but how well it serves you.
Be Consistent
Consistency is key when it comes to reaping the benefits of a morning routine. Try to stick to your routine as much as possible, but also be flexible and allow for adjustments as needed.
